Basic Concepts of Search: Because Smarter AI Starts with Smarter Searching

1. Search is About Matching — Not Magic

Search isn’t magic. It’s matching. You’ve got two piles:

4. Vector Search

Once you have all those fancy embeddings (vectors), you need a way to search through them quickly.

Vector search does exactly that:

  • Find the points (documents) that are closest to your query point.
  • Typically using something like cosine similarity or Euclidean distance.

Imagine throwing a dart onto a star map and seeing which stars are closest to where they landed.

Databases like FAISS, Pinecone, and Chroma — they’re all specialized for vector search at scale.

5. Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)

Once you can search smartly, you can combine search with generation.

You search for relevant bits of knowledge — then pass those to an LLM to generate an answer.

This is called RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation), and it’s quietly powering the future of AI. It’s why modern AI can:

  • Answer questions about your company docs.
  • Summarize huge reports.
  • Do homework (no comment).

Without a good search, the AI hallucinates. With a good search, it sounds like an expert.
